Emotiv
Added to: you're doing it wrong.
Emotiv, what are you thinking?

--

Almost four years ago I participated in this thread (http://hardware.slashdot.org/story/08/02/20/1314254/brain-control-headset-for-gamers) on slashdot, and I haven't stopped thinking about how unbelievable *awesome* this product is since.

My god...think of the applications of this! 14 EEG sensors in the hands of hackers, for [comparatively] next-to-nothing. I've spent the last four years mentally designing prosthesis interfaces and, recently, remote-emotional-feedback systems.

(remotiv! Ha!)

The whole time it has been "soon soon soon soon soon I will get one of these things! Only $300! Soon soon soon soon".

Yesterday, I ordered one.

FINALLY!

What's disgusting about this, emotiv, and where you're "doing it wrong" is that there are 3 models of neuroheadset, which are all the same hardware.

There is the consumer "epoc" (which is what I got). $300.

There is the development headset. $500

And there is the research headset. $750

The additional $200 and $450 gets you access to emotiv's software development kit. Basically it lets you dump the data out of the sensors and read it yourself, as opposed to playing silly parlor-trick demos.

Why on *earth* would you want to restrict hackers from breaking this thing wide open? Do you want everybody wearing one of these? Do you want to be on the news when a hacker builds a "brain powered go kart"? Do you want to be on the cover of wired every other month while you're changing the game in prosthetics?

If you keep people from building this stuff, that's not going to happen...

Hardware companies, this is very very simple. Do you want free engineers? Like tens of thousands of eager hackers that will build out your product for you?

Good! Because we want to do that for you! FOR FREE!

Just give us the [pardon] FUCKING [/pardon] SDK...

This isn't much of a problem for me...there was a lovely group of hackers that reverse engineered emotiv's encryption and I can now dump the neuro-data directly into python...but c'mon, guys, wtf are you thinking here?

(Can't wait for this thing to arrive! SQUEE!)
